IPOH, Sept 23 — The final day of school holidays turned into a harsh lesson for 69 students among 136 individuals detained during a police operation against illegal street racing on Jalan Klebang Ria. The operation, led by the Royal Malaysian Police (Perak contingent), began at 6:30 PM and continued into the early hours.
Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris reported that 130 men and six women, aged 12 to 45, were arrested for illegal racing and for being spectators. The arrests followed public complaints about disturbances in the Klebang area. Those detained face charges under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act, and investigations are ongoing.
Two non-student detainees tested positive for methamphetamine. The police also issued 168 summonses for various offenses, including 40 for riding without a license and 29 for missing side mirrors, and seized 20 motorcycles.
Azizi noted a concerning trend of families, including children, attending these races, which contributes to public disturbances. He emphasized the risks of young spectators eventually participating in the races. During the operation, a police corporal suffered minor injuries after being struck by a rider.
