Tragic Elephant Attack in Mersing: Victim's Father Recalls Son’s Final Moments

MERSING, Sept 27 — Mohamad Syafik Yakob’s father, Yakob Md Yusof, 65, recounted the harrowing details of his son’s death after being trampled by an elephant in Felda Tenggaroh 5. Yakob learned of the attack around 11am and rushed to the scene, finding his 31-year-old son unconscious.

According to Yakob, Mohamad Syafik and two friends attempted to shoo the elephant away from SK Tenggaroh 5 when the incident occurred. One friend escaped, while Zalini Dahlan, 51, suffered serious injuries.

Yakob noted that while wild elephants have roamed the area for years, they have never posed a threat to residents. Village chief Alias Atan expressed concern over the attack, especially near a school, urging authorities to take action to prevent future incidents. Reports indicate the attack involved a young elephant believed to be separated from its group. Mohamad Syafik's remains will be laid to rest at the local Muslim cemetery after a post-mortem.
