Human Rights Watch Accuses Israel of 'Acts of Genocide' Over Gaza Water Crisis"
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Israel of committing "acts of genocide" in Gaza, citing the deliberate destruction of water infrastructure and the cutting off of supplies to civilians. According to HRW's new report, Israeli authorities have systematically deprived Gazans of essential water, a move that the group claims has contributed to thousands of deaths, with more to come. The report details the damage to water facilities, including solar panels, treatment plants, and reservoirs, as well as attacks on repair workers and the blocking of fuel and materials needed for repairs.
In response, Israel dismissed the accusations as "lies," asserting that it has continuously provided water and humanitarian aid to Gaza. HRW, however, argued that Israel's actions fit the definition of "extermination" and genocide under international law, based on a statement made by Israel's defense minister in October 2023, which suggested a complete siege of Gaza, including the denial of water.
The report also highlighted the devastating impact on Gaza’s health, with many dying from waterborne diseases, dehydration, and untreated infections. HRW called on the international community to take action, including sanctions and halting arms sales to Israel, to prevent further escalation.
