Liverpool Reach League Cup Semis; Jesus’ Hat-Trick Powers Arsenal to Comeback Win
LONDON — Defending champions Liverpool secured their spot in the League Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 win over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott were on target for the Reds, with Nunez’s first-half goal and Elliott’s second coming in quick succession. Southampton pulled one back through Cameron Archer, but Liverpool held firm for the victory.
At the Emirates, Gabriel Jesus scored a second-half hat-trick as Arsenal came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 3-2. Jean-Philippe Mateta gave Palace an early lead, but Jesus equalised and then scored twice more to complete a superb comeback. Eddie Nketiah pulled one back for Palace late on, but Arsenal’s dominance saw them through.
Meanwhile, Newcastle triumphed 3-1 over Brentford, with Sandro Tonali scoring twice, including a stunning long-range strike. Bruno Guimaraes assisted Fabian Schar for the third goal, and Yoane Wissa’s injury-time header was little consolation for Brentford.
The final semi-final spot will be decided Thursday when Tottenham Hotspur face Manchester United.
