JAKARTA: The director-general of the Jakarta Metro Jaya Police Narcotics Department, Donald Parlaungan Simanjuntak, has been dishonourably discharged from the police institution, local media reported.

The decision to dismiss him was based on findings of violations of the code of ethics and professional standards of the Indonesian National Police (Polri), related to a systematic extortion case by police officers against Malaysian nationals attending the Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) concert in Kemayoran, North Jakarta, which concluded on Dec 15, 2024.

"The tribunal decided on 'dishonourable discharge' for the director of the narcotics division and his unit head," said Police Commissioner M Choirul Anam on Wednesday, as reported by Kompas.

Meanwhile, the fate of other police officers involved in the case will be decided at the next tribunal session on Thursday (Jan 2).

Additionally, M Choirul said that both senior officers who were dismissed have already submitted appeals for consideration.

The extortion case involving Malaysians at DWP included a total of 18 police officers from district, city, and regional police offices. All of them have been detained pending further investigation.

Last Saturday, Indonesian police arrested 18 of their officers for allegedly extorting Malaysian nationals during the three-day DWP concert in Kemayoran, North Jakarta.

The arrests followed several complaints from Malaysian nationals who claimed they were harassed and extorted throughout the event, which went viral on social media.

The case is now being closely monitored by external bodies such as the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) to ensure transparency and fairness in the investigation.
