Malaysia Becomes First to Launch 6-Way 4G Network Sharing Agreement
KUALA PILAH, Jan 28 — Malaysia has made history as the first country in the world to sign a 6-way 4G Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) sharing agreement, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
The groundbreaking agreement, signed in May last year, marks a major milestone in telecom collaboration. The initiative, led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), aims to enhance connectivity, especially in underserved areas. The telcos involved—Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM, and YTL Communications—have worked together to develop the necessary infrastructure for this shared network.
Fahmi highlighted that this initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration between competing companies to improve internet access, particularly in rural and remote regions. He also unveiled the 6-Way 4G MOCN Network Sharing and Infrastructure Guidelines, alongside the opening of a new telecommunications tower in Jalan Bukit Putus.
The project covers key locations across the country, including Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Selangor, and Penang, with plans to expand further to enhance nationwide connectivity.
Fahmi stressed that this collaboration sets a global precedent, showcasing how telcos can unite to benefit the people by improving coverage and internet speed. He also called for greater awareness around social media’s impact on children and the risks of online scams.
