ALOR STAR: Police have seized a motorcycle ridden by a teenager who rammed into an elderly woman on a zebra crossing in front of Masjid Zahir here on Thursday evening.
Kota Setar police chief, Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawaty Saad, said the motorcycle was seized after police recorded a statement from the 15-year-old teenager following the report he lodged yesterday (Friday) evening.
"We have seized the motorcycle, which has some modifications, and we will be taking action against the owner of the vehicle for allowing a teenager without a valid licence to ride it," she said.
Salawaty confirmed that the 65-year-old victim had lodged a report at noon yesterday.
"According to the complainant, the incident occurred at about 9.40pm on Feb 13 while she was crossing the road at the zebra crossing in front of Masjid Zahir. Several vehicles had reportedly stopped to give way to her, but suddenly, a motorcycle appeared and hit her, causing her to fall.
"Following the collision, the rider and pillion passenger immediately left the scene, leaving the complainant behind. She sustained injuries to several parts of her body and later received treatment at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital," she said in a statement.
In an 80-second video recorded by a passing car's dashcam, the motorcycle rider and his female pillion rider were seen leaving the scene immediately after the incident. The video, posted on the Kedah Kini Facebook page, has garnered over 37,000 views.
Based on the video, the victim was crossing the road with other women after they performed Isya' prayers at Masjid Zahir.
Salawaty added that the teenager subsequently lodged his report at the Kota Setar traffic police station at about 7pm on Friday.
"Police have recorded statements from both the rider and his 13-year-old female pillion rider. The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," she said.
She urged eyewitnesses of the incident to come forward and provide statements at the Kota Setar traffic police station or contact assistant traffic investigation officer Sergeant Mohd Khairulnizam Abdul Aziz at 04-7321222 or 011-28350767 to assist the investigation.
