KLUANG: Having 15 past offences, being intoxicated, and being involved in drug abuse and trafficking are believed to be the reasons why a man fled from the police by recklessly driving a Honda here yesterday.
Kluang district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh, said the suspect would face six charges, with a remand application to be made today at the Batu Pahat Court.
"The police confirm the incident as seen in the viral video, where the suspect was chased for approximately five kilometres around 9am yesterday.
The police pursued the suspect from the Jalan Haji Manan junction until he was apprehended at the traffic lights in front of Kluang Mall.
"The arrest involved a local man driving a suspicious motor vehicle who failed to cooperate when police officers from the district police headquarters' patrol unit (MPV) attempted to inspect him.
"The police also managed to seize suspected heroin and a criminal record check revealed the suspect had 15 previous offences related to criminal and drug cases. A urine test on the suspect showed positive results for methamphetamine," he said in a statement.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug possession and trafficking.
Additionally, the case is also being investigated under Section 44(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
"The case is also being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving on the road that could endanger the lives of other road users.
"The suspect will also be investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants from performing their duties," he said.
He added that investigations under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug consumption and Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder have also been initiated.
