GEORGE TOWN: Free ferry services will be offered exclusively to Malaysian citizens on March 29 and March 30 in conjunction with Hari Raya, the Penang Port Commission (PPC) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) announced today.
PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the free ferry services would be available for travel between the two ferry terminals, Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal (PSAH) and Raja Tun Uda Terminal (PRTU).
He advised the public to plan their trips in advance and refer to the latest ferry schedules through the official websites and social media platforms of PPC and PPSB.
"This initiative is a manifestation of the ongoing commitment of PPC and PPSB to facilitate the travel of Malaysians, especially during this meaningful festive season.
"PPC and PPSB aim to foster the spirit of unity and joy of Eid Aidilfitri by offering the experience of free ferry rides.
"The free ferry service is not only intended to reduce traffic congestion in Penang but also to encourage the use of more sustainable and efficient public transportation," he said today.
Yeoh says he invites all Malaysians to take advantage of the free ferry service.
Based on the ferry service statistics for round-trip journeys during the 2024 Aidilfitri celebration, over 27,801 pedestrian passengers and 5,740 two-wheeled vehicles used the ferry service, representing a significant increase.
"This proves that the ferry service is a preferred mode of transportation for Malaysians.
"With the availability of this free ferry service, I also hope it will help alleviate the financial burden of Malaysians and provide an opportunity to celebrate Eid Aidilfitri in a more joyful and meaningful way," he added.
PPC and PPSB, according to Yeoh, remain committed to taking various measures to ensure that the ferry service runs smoothly.
He said the comfort, safety, and satisfaction of their customers were the top priorities of Penang Port.
