TOKYO — A 43-year-old man, Yoshitaka Toda, has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a commuter during rush hour at Tokyo’s Todai-mae Station. Police say he attacked the victim — a man in his 20s — on the platform, then chased him onto a subway car and slashed his head multiple times.
Another passenger who intervened sustained a hand injury. Reports indicate Toda and the victim were strangers. He was restrained by commuters and arrested at the scene.
Though Japan has low violent crime rates, the incident adds to a series of rare but high-profile knife attacks in recent years.
