Pakistan said it launched a military operation against India early today, targeting multiple bases including a missile storage site in northern India as the neighbours extended their worst fighting in nearly three decades.
Pakistan’s offensive came shortly after it said India had fired missiles at three air bases earlier today including one close to the capital, Islamabad, but Pakistani air defences intercepted most of them.
Locked in a longstanding dispute over Kashmir, the two countries have engaged in daily clashes since Wednesday when India launched strikes inside Pakistan on what it called rebel bases.Pakistan claims to have struck a BrahMos storage site near Beas, as well as airfields in Pathankot and Udhampur, calling their operation "Operation Bunyanun Marsoos." Explosions and sirens were reported in Srinagar and Jammu, India. Pakistan's military stated India launched air-to-surface missiles targeting several of their air bases, with some missiles bypassing defenses but not hitting "air assets." This follows India's strikes on Wednesday, which they said were retaliation for a tourist attack in Kashmir, a claim Pakistan denies. Cross-border fire, shelling, and drone/missile exchanges have occurred since, with fighting concentrated in Indian Kashmir and nearby states. Explosions were also reported in Lahore and Peshawar. Unverified reports indicate at least 48 deaths since Wednesday.
