GENEVA — US President Donald Trump praised a meeting with Chinese officials in Switzerland, calling it a “total reset” achieved in a “friendly but constructive” atmosphere.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said the talks covered many issues and resulted in significant agreements. He expressed hope for greater access for American businesses in China, claiming “GREAT PROGRESS MADE,” though without offering details.
The Geneva meeting marked the first in-person talks between US and Chinese trade leaders since both countries imposed over 100% tariffs on each other’s goods. Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng met for eight hours with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
Talks will continue today, though no specific breakthroughs or public statements followed the first session, held at the residence of Switzerland’s UN ambassador. The ongoing trade conflict has stalled nearly US$600 billion in annual bilateral trade.
