Construction has commenced on Singapore Changi Airport's Terminal 5 (T5), a mega-terminal projected to open by the mid-2030s after a two-year pandemic-induced delay. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that T5, equal in size to the current terminals combined, will boost Changi's capacity by over 50%, accommodating an additional 50 million passengers annually. Located in the Changi East development, T5 will integrate with existing terminals, becoming the new hub for the Singapore Airlines Group while still allowing other carriers to expand. T5 aims to connect Changi to over 200 cities, up from the current 170, and will feature enhanced ground transportation links, including an extension of the Thomson-East Coast Line MRT connecting to the city center and the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link. The project is expected to create jobs and demand new skills, with Changi currently being the world's fourth busiest international airport, handling a record 68.4 million passengers in the past year.
