India’s coastguard is scrambling to contain an oil spill after the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 sank off Kerala’s coast on Saturday.
The 184-metre vessel, carrying 640 containers—including hazardous materials and calcium carbide—went down due to flooding. All 24 crew members were rescued.
With 370 tonnes of fuel onboard, efforts are underway using ships and a Dornier aircraft to prevent oil spread. Authorities have warned the public to stay away from any containers that may wash ashore. Coastal regions remain on high alert due to environmental risks.
