KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 1 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani lived up to their billing with a commanding performance in their Singapore Open opener today, sweeping aside Taiwan's Lee Fang Chih-Lee Fang Jen 21-13, 21-11.
It was the duo's first match since ascending to the top of the world rankings on Tuesday — becoming the first Malaysian shuttlers to hold the No. 1 spot since Lee Chong Wei in June 2017 — and they marked the occasion in ferocious fashion.
"We always enjoy and trust the process. This No. 1 ranking is not just ours — it belongs to the whole of Malaysia," said Sze Fei.
"We owe it to our families, our sponsors, our team — everyone who's supported us unconditionally."
Izzuddin added: "We're grateful for the backing of our families and coaches who always believed in us. Their support keeps our spirits high."
The win also improved their head-to-head record against the Taiwanese twins, ranked No. 20 in the world, to 6-1.
