A massive glacier collapse in the Swiss Alps on Wednesday destroyed the village of Blatten in the Lotschental valley, although it had been evacuated due to the risk. The collapse occurred at around 3:30 PM, with three million cubic meters of material from the Birch Glacier tumbling into the valley. The debris buried homes, but there were no known injuries, although one person, a 64-year-old local man, remains missing. The glacier collapse had been anticipated for days, and drone footage showed widespread destruction. A search and rescue operation is ongoing. Swiss officials, including President Karin Keller-Sutter, expressed their support for the affected residents, and efforts will continue to rebuild the village. Climate change has contributed to the retreat of glaciers in the Alps, making such events more likely.
