SEOUL — A fire broke out Tuesday in a building next to Seoul’s historic Jogye Buddhist temple, but was swiftly contained without injuries or damage to national treasures, officials confirmed.
Over 300 monks and Jogye order officials, who were in a conference hall, were safely evacuated. The fire occurred in a building used by the Jogye order and a Buddhist museum housing national treasures and cultural artefacts.
Around 30 fire trucks responded, preventing the blaze from reaching the temple's wooden main hall. The exact treasures inside weren’t disclosed, but precautionary steps were being taken to protect them from smoke and soot. The fire's cause remains under investigation.
