BALLYMENA — Violent unrest broke out for a second night in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, following the arrest of two teens accused of attempting to rape a girl. Masked protesters threw petrol bombs and set fires, prompting police to respond with water cannons and baton rounds.
The attacks, described by police as racially motivated, targeted minority communities and law enforcement. At least 15 officers were injured, homes and businesses were damaged, and one man was arrested for riot-related offences.
Tensions escalated after a vigil near the alleged assault site turned violent, with mobs attacking properties and blocking roads. Residents described the scenes as terrifying and said foreigners were being targeted.
Authorities condemned the violence, vowing to bring those responsible to justice, while the UK Prime Minister’s office expressed concern over the situation.
