KUALA LUMPUR: Bukti Aman has confirmed the arrest of three Malaysians, including a rapper, by Laos authorities over an attempt to smuggle 103 packets of cannabis.
The suspects were detained on May 27 at Wattay International Airport after they arrived from Malaysia via a Thai Airways flight.
Bukit Aman Narcotic Crime Investigation Department acting director Deputy Commissioner Mat Zani @ Mohd Salahuddin Che Ali said investigations were ongoing to determine the source of the drugs.
"We are checking if the drugs were sourced from Malaysia or Thailand," he said when contacted today.
He said checks revealed that the suspects left Malaysia on May 22.
"All three are in the custody of Laos authorities. We are conducting further investigations and gathering more information on this case."
A Laos news portal reported that authorities seized more than 100 packets of marijuana at Wattay International Airport on May 27 following the arrest of three Malaysians accused of attempting to smuggle the drugs to Germany.
The operation involved Customs officials, airport security and other agencies. Enforcement officers grew suspicious of the three travellers during a routine screening.
It was reported that the drugs were uncovered after an inspection of the suspects' six suitcases.
Enforcers found 86kg of drugs.
It was reported that the suspects were preparing to board a Thai Airways flight to Germany.
