NEW YORK — The fatal crash of Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, has dealt a serious blow to Boeing just days before the Paris Air Show. With 260 lives lost, global leaders expressed sorrow, and Boeing’s stock fell nearly 5%.

CEO Kelly Ortberg pledged full support for the investigation and extended condolences. The crash—marking the first fatal 787 incident—adds pressure on Boeing’s leadership, despite recent signs of recovery.

Analysts believe the accident is unlikely linked to a design flaw, unlike the earlier 737 MAX crashes. Still, the incident could dominate conversations at the air show, where Boeing aims to secure new 787 orders.

Boeing has faced ongoing scrutiny over 787 quality issues, including whistleblower allegations and an April 2024 Senate hearing. Calls are growing for the FAA to release a related safety report.

While Boeing’s new leadership under Ortberg has gained praise, the tragedy raises fresh doubts about the company’s reliability and intensifies its competition with Airbus.
