GEORGE TOWN — The family of two Chinese tourists killed by a falling tree at Penang’s Pinang Peranakan Museum in September last year has filed a RM1.7 million civil suit against six parties, including the museum operator, landowners, a tour agency, the driver, and the Penang City Council (MBPP).

Yang Xueli and Wang Geng Feng, the victims’ next of kin, filed the suit after their letter of demand went unanswered or denied by most parties. The tragedy claimed the lives of Liu Zhu and his daughter Liu Xinxin when a tree collapsed onto their car.

The family alleges negligence by those responsible for maintaining the tree and area. Some defendants denied liability, claiming the tree was not on their land or under their care. MBPP said it had no jurisdiction over the privately-owned tree and had received no prior complaints.

Their lawyer, Ng Kian Nam, said the case was filed pro bono and urged authorities to take responsibility, especially as it involves tourist safety.
