PHILADELPHIA — Flamengo began their Club World Cup campaign with a confident 2-0 win over Tunisia's Esperance, setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown with Chelsea.
Goals from Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Luiz Araujo sealed the victory in Philadelphia, with former Chelsea player Filipe Luis managing the Brazilian side. Italy international Jorginho, recently signed from Arsenal, made his debut against Esperance and is set to face former club Chelsea in the next match on Friday.
De Arrascaeta struck early in the 17th minute, converting a pass from Araujo, before Araujo added a second in the 70th minute with a composed finish. Despite a brief scare from Youcef Belaili, Esperance rarely threatened, as Flamengo dominated much of the game in front of a crowd of nearly 26,000.
