GEORGE TOWN — Once home to a close-knit Eurasian community, a row of five terraced houses behind the Assumption Church has been beautifully restored and rebranded as Argus Residence, now part of the Seven Terraces Hotel under George Town Heritage Hotels (GTHH).
Built in 1928 and rented to Eurasian families for over 70 years, the homes were a lively hub where children once played freely along Argus Lane. Among the families who lived there were the De Souza, Scully, Newman, Cutter, and Dragone families.
Stan De Souza, now 86, fondly recalled his childhood in the lane, surviving WWII, and attending school nearby. He was touched to revisit the site during restoration and plans to return with his family to relive old memories.
Each restored house is named after the families who once lived there. GTHH founder Chris Ong said the interiors combine Edwardian and mid-century styles and the project aims to preserve and celebrate the rich heritage of George Town’s Eurasian community.
The Argus Residence is now open for bookings, with GTHH also collecting stories from former residents to honour their legacy.
