Top seed Daria Kasatkina was ousted by qualifier Lulu Sun, who triumphed 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 at the WTA Eastbourne Open. Sun, a 2024 Wimbledon quarter-finalist, capitalized on one decisive break in the final set to topple the defending champion.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Joao Fonseca clinched his first grass-court victory in the ATP draw, coming from a set down to beat Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 6-7(8), 6-0, 6-3. Fonseca becomes the youngest man to win at Eastbourne since Taylor Fritz in 2015 and now faces top seed Fritz in round two.

Two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur also exited early, losing 7-5, 6-2 to Australia’s Maya Jošt, while Britain’s Daniel Evans recovered from a set deficit to down Miomir Kecmanović 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and will meet second seed Tommy Paul next.
