Two Native American groups have strongly condemned Donald Trump’s call to restore the Washington NFL team’s old "Redskins" name, calling it disrespectful and harmful. In social media posts, Trump said many, including "our great Indian people," want the team—now called the Commanders—to revert to its former name.Trump also urged the Cleveland Guardians to return to their old name, the "Indians." Native groups like the Association on American Indian Affairs and the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) rejected the push, saying such names reduce Native cultures to offensive stereotypes and insult tribal sovereignty. The Redskins name was retired in 2020 after years of backlash over its racist imagery. Trump threatened to block the team’s planned stadium in Washington, D.C., unless the name is restored, though he has no direct power to do so.While most Native groups oppose the change, the Native American Guardians Association supports Trump’s stance, criticizing "cancel culture." The Commanders, who plan to move back to D.C. in 2030, and the NFL have not commented.
