ASEAN foreign ministers have urged an immediate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia due to mounting casualties and humanitarian impact along their contested border. They called for both nations to halt hostilities and return to dialogue, warning of regional destabilization.

The crisis, which reignited into the worst fighting in over a decade last Thursday, has so far killed more than 30 people (including 13 Thai and 8 Cambodian civilians) and displaced over 200,000.

ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful dispute resolution and fully supports efforts by Malaysia, the current ASEAN Chair, to mediate. Peace talks between Cambodia and Thailand were scheduled to begin in Kuala Lumpur today, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirming US officials are also present to assist.
