Five people, including an off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officer and the suspected gunman, were killed in a shooting incident at a skyscraper on Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening. The suspected gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, 27, from Las Vegas, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident began around 6 PM local time at 345 Park Avenue, an office tower housing major firms like Blackstone, KPMG, and the National Football League headquarters. Police responded en masse, containing the scene.
According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, surveillance footage showed Tamura exiting a BMW with an AR-15-style rifle and immediately opening fire in the lobby, striking the off-duty NYPD officer, Didarul Islam, 36, who was working security. Tamura then "sprayed" the lobby with gunfire, killing a woman and a security guard before taking the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he killed another person before shooting himself.
Mayor Eric Adams expressed his deepest sympathies for the victims and the fallen officer, praising Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant and father of two with a third child on the way, as a hero. Police stated Tamura had a "documented mental health history" but his motive for targeting the building remains under investigation. The area was placed on lockdown during the incident, with numerous emergency vehicles and personnel deployed.
