Intense rainstorms have caused significant devastation in China's capital, Beijing, resulting in 30 deaths and the evacuation of over 80,000 people as of Monday midnight. State media reported that the continuous, extreme rainfall led to major disasters across several northern Chinese provinces, including Hebei, Jilin, and Shandong.

The hardest-hit areas in Beijing include the suburban district of Miyun, as well as Huairou and Fangshan districts. Dozens of roads have been closed, and over 130 villages have lost electricity. Authorities urged residents to heed weather warnings and avoid hazardous areas.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for authorities to plan for worst-case scenarios and accelerate the relocation of residents from flood-threatened regions. Beyond Beijing, other provinces have also suffered: a landslide in Hebei killed four people with eight still missing, while flash floods in Shandong killed two with ten missing earlier this month.

Natural disasters are common in China during summer, with some regions experiencing heavy rains and others extreme heat. China, the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, aims to become carbon-neutral by 2060.
