Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang announced that the bill to amend Malaysia's Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984 may be tabled in the current parliamentary session, pending Cabinet approval. This move signifies Malaysia's commitment to exploring nuclear energy as a future power source, a commitment expected to be incorporated into the 13th Malaysia Plan.
Chang noted that a pre-feasibility study has been completed, indicating significant potential for Malaysia to adopt nuclear technology. While Malaysia has the expertise to extract thorium, it lacks the R&D capacity to utilize it for electricity generation, unlike countries such as China. To address this, Malaysia is enhancing its R&D capabilities through collaborations with nations like China, Russia, India, and the United States.
