KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has approved new regulations to allow the testing of a time-clock system to ensure continuous play in tournaments from next year

In a press release today, the world governing body said the decision was made during the BWF council meeting on Aug 29. This will take effect from Nov 18-23 during Week 27 of the 2025 season.

Under the new rules, players will be given 25 seconds between rallies. The clock will begin once the umpire updates the score, with the server required to be ready to serve before the time expires and the receiver to be prepared once the server is in position.

Umpires will retain discretion to extend the time limit in exceptional circumstances, such as medical interventions or extended court mopping.

Players will also be allowed to towel off, drink, or apply cold spray without seeking permission, provided they are ready to resume play within the 25 seconds.

The move follows data analysis of hundreds of matches across major championships and the BWF World Tour.

Findings showed that when no interruptions occurred, the average interval between rallies was 22 seconds compared with nine seconds of actual play.

BWF believes the 25-second rule will strike the right balance between giving players sufficient rest and ensuring smooth competition flow.

The governing body has carried out preliminary tests, including positioning of the time clock on court to ensure visibility for players, coaches, and officials. More trials are scheduled in the coming months.

BWF has also invited its members to conduct internal testing and gather feedback from coaches, players, and other stakeholders. An online survey is open, with responses due by Sept 19.
