IPOH, Nov 4 — An electrician and a restaurant worker were fined a total of RM7,000 by the Magistrate's Court here today for impersonating police officers to extort money from two teenagers.
Wong Jiun Wei, 24, and Lim Boon Ping, 40, pleaded guilty to posing as traffic police officers and demanding money from the two teens, aged 15 and 17, to overlook their modified motorcycles.
The court heard that the pair, who had a police-style vest, handcuffs, and other paraphernalia, received RM400 from the victims via a bank transfer.
The offence took place in front of a restaurant in Taman Ipoh Timur Baru at around 12.30 am on Nov 1.
Both men were charged under Section 419 of the Penal Code for cheating by personation, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine.
In a separate charge, Wong also pleaded guilty to possessing police equipment without permission under Section 89 of the Police Act 2024.
After hearing mitigation from their lawyer, who cited their low income and remorse, Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan fined Wong RM5,000 for the impersonation charge and a further RM2,000 for possessing the police equipment. Lim was fined RM5,000. Both men paid their fines.
