FIFA President Gianni Infantino has publicly defended the decision to award the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking in London, Infantino dismissed mounting calls from various international groups to boycott the 2026 World Cup, which is set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico starting this June.
The award has sparked significant controversy following recent U.S. military actions and immigration policies. However, Infantino insisted that "objectively," the President deserves recognition for his efforts, suggesting that football should serve as a bridge in a "divided and aggressive world."
Despite the political tension, FIFA remains firm that the tournament will proceed as scheduled. Infantino also hinted that the governing body might soon re-evaluate the ban on Russian teams, potentially allowing them to return to international youth competitions later this year.
