Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil officially launched Internet Safety Day 2026 today at Titiwangsa Lake Gardens. During the event, he highlighted that the Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA) has been strictly enforced since January 1, 2026. This act introduces more rigorous regulations for social media platforms and includes a "regulatory sandbox" approach for enforcing new age restrictions.
A key part of the new enforcement includes a ban on social media registration for individuals under the age of 16 unless specific parental consent and verification measures are met. The Ministry is working closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure platforms comply with these safety standards to protect children and families from online harm.
The event, which included an "Explorace" involving 300 youths, was designed to raise public awareness about digital literacy. Fahmi emphasized that the government’s integrated strategy focuses not just on enforcement, but also on educating users to manage the digital ecosystem safely and responsibly.
