German automotive giant BMW has issued a massive global recall today affecting several hundred thousand vehicles due to a critical engine starter defect. The company identified a faulty electromagnet in the starter system that can overheat, potentially leading to a fire in the engine compartment. The recall specifically targets 16 different models produced between July 2020 and July 2022.
The manufacturer has advised owners of the affected vehicles to park their cars outdoors and away from structures until the necessary repairs are completed. BMW dealerships worldwide have been instructed to replace the electromagnet free of charge. This safety alert comes at a challenging time for the brand as it transitions its production lines toward more electric vehicle (EV) models.
Safety regulators in the United States and Europe are closely monitoring the recall process to ensure all affected units are accounted for. While no major injuries have been reported so far, the company is urging customers to check their Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) on the official BMW website to confirm if their car is part of the recall.
