Malaysia's national women's hockey squad, the Speedy Tigress, suffered a heavy 0-5 defeat to Ireland in their opening 2026 World Cup qualifying match in Santiago, Chile, on March 3, 2026. Although the first quarter remained goalless, Ireland broke the deadlock in the 21st minute through Kathryn Mullan, followed by a penalty corner goal from Caoimhe Perdue just before halftime.

The second half saw Ireland tighten their grip on the game, adding three more goals through Sarah McAuley, Michelle Carey, and Roisin Upton to seal the emphatic win. Head coach Mohd Nasihin Nubli noted that while the team started well, lapses in discipline and avoidable mistakes allowed Ireland to capitalize on counter-attacks.

This defeat puts early pressure on Malaysia in their bid to qualify for the World Cup. The team will need to rebound quickly in their upcoming Group B fixtures to keep their qualification hopes alive after this challenging start against a disciplined Irish side.
