A 21-year-old final-year student from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), S. Vikneswaran, pleaded not guilty at the Kuantan Sessions Court on March 3, 2026. He faces two charges: one for desecrating the Quran with intent to insult Islam under Section 295 of the Penal Code, and another for posting offensive communication on the social media platform Threads under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The charges stem from a viral incident on February 22 where images allegedly showing an individual's foot on a copy of the Quran were circulated online. During the court proceedings, the defense highlighted that the student is financially dependent on his father and has a history of psychological issues requiring clinical attention during his school years.

Judge Harmi Thamri Mohamad set bail at RM10,000 for both charges with one surety and ordered the accused to report to a police station monthly. The court has fixed April 8, 2026, for the next case mention. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously emphasized that the government would not tolerate any insults to the Quran, while the university is conducting its own internal disciplinary probe.
