In a milestone for Sarawak's sports development, young fighter Leeroy Valentine Lavern has been selected to represent Malaysia at the upcoming World Junior Wushu Championships in Tianjin, China. Leeroy is the first athlete from the state to earn a spot in the national squad for this specific world tournament, which is scheduled to take place from March 23–31. His selection was based on merit following an impressive silver-medal performance at last year’s National Junior Wushu Championships.

Sarawak sanda head coach Tsan Nieng Khai hailed the call-up as a breakthrough for the sport's development in the state. Leeroy is one of only two athletes chosen nationwide for the prestigious competition in China, highlighting the high level of skill he demonstrated during national trials. This selection is seen as a key step in nurturing elite young talent and accelerating the transition cycle for national champions in combat sports.

As Leeroy prepares for his international debut, his success is being used as a benchmark for Sarawak's preparations for the 2026 Malaysian Games (SUKMA). The state contingent recently received an official invitation to participate in the upcoming SUKMA in Selangor, where they intend to defend their championship title. Leeroy's emergence on the world stage provides a significant morale boost for the state's athletic programs as they aim for continued national dominance.
