George Russell claimed a controlled victory in the 2026 season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 8, leading teammate Kimi Antonelli to a perfect 1-2 finish for Mercedes. The race marked the beginning of a new technical era in Formula 1, featuring intense wheel-to-wheel battles in the opening laps between Russell and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. While Ferrari opted for a different strategy under early Virtual Safety Cars, Mercedes successfully executed a one-stop plan to secure the top spots.

Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed the podium for Ferrari in third and fourth places, respectively. Reigning world champion Lando Norris finished a distant fifth for McLaren, while Max Verstappen produced a resilient drive to recover from 20th on the grid to finish sixth for Red Bull. British rookie Arvid Lindblad also impressed on his debut, scoring points with an eighth-place finish for Racing Bulls.
