The government of Laos has launched a massive humanitarian response in the Sikhottabong district of Vientiane following a rare and violent hailstorm. The disaster, which struck over the weekend, damaged or destroyed more than 2,000 households. Large hailstones and high winds shattered windows, tore through roofing, and caused localized flooding, leaving hundreds of families displaced.

Emergency relief, including food, clean water, and temporary shelter materials, is being distributed today to affected residents. The Laos-International Precious Metals Refinery, which only began operations last Friday, reportedly suffered minor exterior damage but remains functional. Local authorities are prioritizing the restoration of power and telecommunications, which were severely disrupted by the falling ice and downed trees.

Agricultural experts are also assessing the damage to local crops, which form the primary livelihood for many in the district. The rare nature of such a severe hailstorm in the region has prompted calls for improved early warning systems and more resilient building standards for rural housing. The government has pledged further financial assistance to help rebuild the most severely damaged homes.
