The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched a formal investigation into five individuals for spreading false information regarding petrol and diesel price hikes. These posts, which went viral on the social media platform Threads, were found to be misleading and had the potential to cause public alarm among consumers. Authorities noted that some content even used edited visuals from Buletin TV3 to gain false credibility, which the broadcaster has since denied.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim issued a stern warning against such "acts of treachery," stating that spreading fake news during a national crisis is a betrayal of the country. The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, up to two years in prison, or both. Officials are urging the public to verify all information through official channels before sharing.
