Malaysia’s Thomas Cup preparations are facing a major hurdle as star shuttler Lee Zii Jia has yet to report for national training at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) due to a persistent ankle injury. National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen has confirmed that the world No. 83 is currently focusing on rehabilitation rather than court practice. While there is no immediate panic, the clock is ticking with the final squad submission deadline approaching this Friday, April 10.
Former badminton great Datuk Rashid Sidek has urged the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to seek clarity quickly, suggesting that a replacement should be named if Zii Jia’s fitness cannot be guaranteed. If he is unable to compete in the Finals in Horsens, Denmark, the door may open for other players like Eogene Ewe or Cheam June Wei to step in. BAM performance committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has also stressed that the national body will not risk sending an injured player to such a high-stakes tournament.
The next few days will be critical for the national squad as they assess Zii Jia's recovery progress and readiness to compete. The 2026 Thomas Cup is a key target for Malaysia, and the absence of their spearhead would significantly alter the team's tactical plans against group-stage rivals like Indonesia and Hong Kong. Fans are hopeful that the former All England champion can recover in time to lead the charge.
