Kota Kinabalu is preparing to welcome more than 3,000 athletes and officials for the BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games scheduled for November 2026. This major regional multi sport event will feature participants under the age of 21 from Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. The games aim to foster regional unity and youth empowerment through nine core sports, including athletics, swimming, badminton, and sepak takraw.

Sabah Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, emphasized that the event goes beyond mere competition, serving as a vital platform for cross border cooperation. Major venues like the Likas Sports Complex and the Likas Aquatic Centre are currently being upgraded to ensure world class facilities for the young competitors. The event is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy and sports tourism in East Malaysia.

The 2026 edition of the games will also include e-sports for the first time, reflecting the growing popularity of competitive gaming in the region. Organizers hope that the "Friendship Games" will leave a lasting legacy by developing leadership and discipline among the participants. As one of the major hosts, Malaysia is aiming for a top three finish in the overall medal tally to showcase its grassroots development success.
