A recently agreed upon two week ceasefire between the United States and Iran is on the verge of collapse. While world leaders initially expressed relief at the truce, the situation remains highly volatile as Israel continues heavy bombardments in Lebanon. Iran’s state media has warned that Tehran will withdraw from the ceasefire if attacks on Lebanon do not cease, leading to fears of a rapid return to full scale hostilities.

The conflict has caused significant disruption to global energy supplies. Iran has reportedly closed the Strait of Hormuz again in response to the strikes in Lebanon, leaving hundreds of ships and oil tankers stranded. This move has sent shockwaves through global markets, with Brent crude prices surging near $112 per barrel. Countries like Australia are already moving to shore up fuel supplies as they prepare for extended disruptions to the waterway, through which a fifth of the world's oil normally passes.

Diplomatic efforts are intensifying to save the deal. US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte today to discuss the crisis, even as he lashing out at member states for their perceived lack of support during the conflict. Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance is set to lead a US delegation for high stakes negotiations with Iran in Pakistan this Saturday. Despite these talks, the White House has maintained a "red line" against Iranian nuclear enrichment, signaling that any final agreement remains far from certain.
