National sprinters Shereen Samson Vallabouy and Umar Osman dominated the 86th Singapore Open Track & Field Championships, each clinching gold in their respective 400m events. Shereen signaled a powerful return to form by blazing through the women’s final with a time of 54.24s, while Umar roared to victory in the men’s category with a time of 47.14s. Their victories led a successful Malaysian contingent that also saw Muhammad Izzul Hanif and Nurkhaleesa Yasmin secure podium finishes in the triple jump events.

These performances are particularly vital as they serve as a benchmark for the national athletics squad's preparation for upcoming regional meets. Team leader Coach Manshahar Abdul Jalil praised the young athletes for their discipline and ability to deliver under international pressure, noting that the "golden sweep" in the 400m indicates a bright future for Malaysia's middle-distance running. The championships concluded yesterday, but the news of the haul has dominated today's headlines as the athletes return home to prepare for the national circuit.

The success in Singapore provides a much-needed boost for Malaysian Athletics, which has recently faced administrative hurdles and presidency disputes. Fans are hopeful that this momentum will carry through to the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor, where these elite athletes will serve as inspiration for the next generation of track stars. National pole vault enthusiasts are also gathered at Stadium UPM today for the National Pole Vault Challenge Series 1, marking a busy weekend for local athletics.
