The Indian government has introduced the Delimitation Bill 2026, proposing to increase Lok Sabha seats from 545 to 850. This historic move aims to redraw constituency boundaries based on the latest census data to ensure fairer representation. It marks the first major update to India’s political map in over 50 years, potentially shifting the balance of national power.

The proposal has sparked intense debate, as critics fear it may favor northern states with high population growth over southern states that successfully controlled their own. Proponents argue that the expansion is necessary because the current ratio of citizens to representatives is no longer sustainable for a healthy democracy. The bill also seeks to increase representation for Union Territories to 35 seats.

If passed, this will be the most significant constitutional shift in Indian democracy since independence. It will fundamentally change how national elections are contested and how the federal government interacts with various states. Political analysts are calling it a "total reset" that will dictate the country’s political future for the next several decades.
