Malaysia is currently hosting the 2026 UCI Track Cycling World Cup at the National Velodrome in Nilai, marking the event's return to the country after a 25-year hiatus. The opening ceremony was graced by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, highlighting the significance of the championship, which has drawn top-tier athletes from over 40 countries. Today's sessions are expected to be high intensity as riders battle for podium finishes and vital ranking points.

All eyes are on national icon Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, who has been praised by Dutch sprint legend Harrie Lavreysen for his remarkable resilience and longevity in the sport. Lavreysen, who sees the "Pocket Rocketman" as a significant threat, expressed his desire for a blockbuster showdown in front of the Malaysian home crowd. While the national team faced a challenging opening day, the presence of veteran stars and promising juniors is expected to drive a stronger performance in today's heats.

The event serves as a major litmus test for Malaysia's track cycling program as it prepares for the upcoming 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor. With tickets ranging from RM30 to RM130 for multi-day passes, fans are flocking to Nilai to witness world-class speed and tactical racing. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has emphasized that hosting such prestigious UCI-sanctioned events is key to establishing Malaysia as a premier destination for international cycling.
