In a major blow to one of the world's most powerful criminal organizations, Mexican special forces have arrested Audias Flores Silva, popularly known as "El Jardinero" (The Gardener). The high-ranking commander of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was captured on Monday in the western state of Nayarit. After a 19-month surveillance operation involving over 500 troops and U.S. intelligence support, Flores Silva was found attempting to hide in a roadside drainage ditch near the community of El Mirador.

The operation was described by the Mexican Navy as a "surgical" success, carried out without a single shot being fired despite Flores being protected by an outer perimeter of 60 gunmen and 30 pickup trucks. His capture is considered a critical milestone because he was widely viewed as the primary successor to the cartel's longtime leader, Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera, who was reportedly killed during a military operation in February. Experts believe this arrest could have an even greater impact on the cartel's operations than the death of El Mencho himself, as Flores Silva controlled key drug laboratories and international smuggling routes into the United States.

Following the arrest, authorities also apprehended his chief financial operator, Cesar Alejandro “N” (alias "El Guero Conta"), in a separate raid in Zapopan. Flores Silva now faces potential extradition to the U.S., where a $5 million reward had been offered for his capture due to his involvement in fentanyl trafficking and violent crimes. Meanwhile, local reports indicate that the arrest has triggered a wave of retaliatory violence in Nayarit, including the burning of vehicles and businesses by cartel loyalists.
