A 40-year-old man in Zhejiang Province, China, has stunned the global medical community by regaining consciousness and showing signs of recovery 40 hours after his heart stopped beating. The patient, identified by the surname Zhu, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while working. Despite immediate intervention, his heart showed no electrical activity (asystole) for an extended period, leading many to believe he had passed away. However, doctors at a local specialist hospital refused to give up, utilizing advanced life support technology to keep his organs viable.

The primary tool credited with this "miracle" is the ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) machine, which essentially acted as the patient's heart and lungs for nearly two days. While ECMO is often used in critical care, it is rare for a patient to regain full neurological function after such a prolonged period without a natural heartbeat. Medical experts noted that the rapid application of high-quality CPR by bystanders and the quick arrival of the medical team prevented immediate brain death, allowing the ECMO to eventually stabilize his condition.

As of Tuesday, Mr. Zhu is reported to be awake and able to recognize his family members, though he remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further observation. Doctors are calling this an exceptional case that challenges current understanding of "the window of resuscitation." The story has gone viral on Chinese social media platforms like Weibo, sparking discussions about the importance of public AED availability and the incredible potential of modern emergency medicine to save lives even in seemingly hopeless situations.
