Director Zach Cregger (famed for Barbarian) officially launched the marketing campaign for his Resident Evil reboot today by revealing the film's title, Resident Evil: Requiem, and its official logo. The new website confirms a theatrical release date of September 18, 2026, in premium formats like IMAX. Cregger, who also co-wrote the script, describes the project as a "survival horror experience" that stays far closer to the tone and mechanics of the original Capcom video games than previous film adaptations.
The story follows a medical courier named Bryan (portrayed by Austin Abrams) who finds himself trapped in a snow-covered, zombie-infested town during a terrifying viral outbreak. Early footage shown at CinemaCon 2026 depicted a grounded, high-tension atmosphere with eerie houses, dark sewers, and relentless mutated creatures. Cregger has famously compared the film to a "horror Fury Road," promising a tightly paced, 90-minute thriller that is "all gas and no brakes."
Produced by PlayStation Productions and Constantin Film, the reboot features a star-studded supporting cast including Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis, and Zach Cherry. The director has acknowledged that he expects "hardcore fans to crucify him" for certain creative deviations, but he maintains that the film’s focus on atmospheric, "original screenplay" horror will feel fresh and edgy. As one of the most anticipated horror releases of the year, Requiem aims to finally deliver the definitive live-action adaptation fans have been waiting for.
