In a major update from Middle-earth, Warner Bros. has confirmed that Jamie Dornan will take on the iconic role of Aragorn (also known as Strider) in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Dornan replaces Viggo Mortensen, who chose not to return for this specific project directed by and starring Andy Serkis as Gollum/Sméagol. The casting was officially announced during the studio's presentation at CinemaCon 2026.

The ensemble cast features the return of several legendary actors, including Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins. Lee Pace is also confirmed to reprise his role as Thranduil from The Hobbit trilogy. Joining as newcomers to the franchise alongside Dornan are Kate Winslet as Marigol and Leo Woodall as Halvard.

The story takes place during the 17-year gap between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on the search for Gollum before Sauron's forces can capture him. Filming is scheduled to begin in New Zealand in July 2026, with a theatrical release date set for December 17, 2027.
